2015 Southern Illinois Student Art Competition
Theme: “Arabian Nights”
Artstarts Company, a non-profit charitable organization, established to promote art and artists in Southern Illinois, announces an art competition. The theme of this year’s competition is “Arabian Nights”, to compliment our production of Aladdin Jr. which will be presented March 27-29, 2015. There are three categories: Primary grades, Middle school, and High school. One first place winner and one second place winner from each category will be selected. Entries will be displayed locally before the Aladdin Jr. Production, and at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center during our presentation of Aladdin Jr.. First place winners will receive $100, 4 show tickets to Aladdin Jr., and an Artstarts t-shirt. Second place winners will receive $50, 4 show tickets to Aladdin Jr. and an Artstarts t-shirt. Winners will be acknowledged during intermission at Friday night’s production, March 27th, of Aladdin Jr.
You are asked to create something that represents the theme “Arabian Nights”. You may make the artwork three dimensional, but the artwork can be no larger than 12" inches in height, depth, or width. Your work must be original. Create a piece of art that you might see in an Arabian setting. Examples could be sand art, tapestries, or a painting with the subject being an oasis, camel or desert scene. Use your imagination.
Eligible participants: Students who reside in one of the following southern counties in Illinois: Alexander, Franklin, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, Williamson. (Home school and private school students are eligible for the competition.)
Rules: All entries must be submitted either by personal delivery or by mail and must be received by Artstarts Company by March 14, 2015. If you desire to mail the entry, please mail the entry to Artstarts Company, P. O. Box 1005, Marion, IL 62959. If you desire to personally deliver your entry to Artstarts Company, please call Liz Elliott, Director of Operations, at 618-645-2787, 618-922-3148 or email her at [email protected] to make arrangements for personal delivery. Artists may use any type of medium to create the artwork. Judging will be based upon originality, use of materials, and creativity. By submitting an entry to the competition, the artist agrees that Artstarts Company may exhibit the artist’s work in an art exhibition, on Artstarts Company’s website and any other form of media, and that Artstarts Company may use the artwork in the company’s production of Aladdin Jr.. A completed entry form must be submitted with each entry. Should the artist desire the return of his or her artwork, the artist should make arrangements to pick up the artwork from Artstarts Company after March 30, 2015 at Artstarts and before May 1, 2015, or the artist should provide Artstarts with a postage paid package to return the artwork to the artist. Any artwork not picked up before May 1, 2015 will be considered the property of Artstarts, Each contestant may enter one entry. Entry forms can be found below.

By submitting an entry to the competition, the artist agrees that Artstarts Company may exhibit the artist’s work in an art exhibition, on Artstarts Company’s website and that Artstarts Company may use the artwork in the company’s production of Aladdin Jr.. All persons entering the contest also agree that any entry may be used by Artstarts Company in any and all media now known or hereafter developed for any purpose. Should the artist desire the return of his or her artwork, the artist should supply Artstarts Company with a self addressed stamped envelope for the return of the artwork, or the artist should personally pick up his or her artwork following the last showing of Aladdin Jr. at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center on March 29, 2015. Any artwork not claimed by the artist by 6 p.m. on May 1, 2015, will become property of Artstarts Company. All persons entering this contest hereby release Artstarts Company from any liability for any damage that may result to any artwork submitted to this contest. All persons entering this contest also hereby acknowledge that no entry has been copied from any other source and that the entries submitted to this contest are the original creation of the person entering the contest.
